Tracy Barnes

Owner, Speech-Language Pathologist

Tracy received her bachelor’s from in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from West Virginia University and her master’s degree in Speech -Language Pathology from Towson State University in Baltimore Maryland. She has a wealth of knowledge in both pediatric and adult populations with communicative and swallowing disorders. Career highlights include developing an on-site Speech, Language and Swallowing program at a rural North Carolina hospital that serviced children and adults in the surrounding communities as well as establishing Capitol City Speech Therapy in 2004 in Fuquay Varina. Capitol City Speech Therapy opened a second location in downtown Raleigh in 2014.


Tracy’s experience includes providing Speech, Language and Swallowing services for people of all ages (birth to adults) in a variety of settings. Tracy’s mission statement since 2004 has been to implement caregiver involvement through coaching strategies whenever possible to help the patient reach their goals at a faster rate. Tracy has also been trained and accredited through the Triple P program (Positive Parenting Program) Level 3-Brief and Level 3-Stepping stones to assist caregivers during challenging “parenting” times. Often, these difficulties can spill over into therapy sessions and/or day to day routines which can directly impact the child’s ability to learn new information.


With many years of experience, Tracy has exceled in creating meaningful activities and routines for caregivers and individuals to utilize during therapy sessions, and for carry over into their home and/or natural environments. Tracy has enjoyed working with individuals with Aphasia, Apraxia, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Stroke, TBI, Dysphagia for infants through adults, Head Neck Cancer Patients, Tracheostomies (voice and swallowing), Passy Muir Valves, Hearing impairment, Cochlear implant, Auditory brain stem implant, Cleft palate, CHARGE, Hydrocephalus, Voice disorders, Tongue thrust, Orofacial myofunctional disorders, Lateral and Frontal lisps, Dysarthria, Fluency disorders,  Transgender Voice Disorders, Speech and Language delays. She pulls from her “tool box” several evidenced based therapeutic intervention strategies such as Structured Teaching by TEACCH, Beckman Oral Motor Approach, Manual Therapy, Assistive Technology, ( PRC devices/Unity, DynaVox, PODD), Auditory Verbal Therapy, Auditory Oral Therapy, ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) Verbal Behavior, entry level sign language, sensory approach, AmpCare-Neuromuscular Stimulation for adults with speech and swallowing difficulties, and DIR/Floortime.  Tracy completed the NC Early Intervention Coaching Training program. Tracy has her CCC from ASHA and is licensed in North Carolina.


When she is not working and running the business, Tracy enjoys time with her friends and family, being active such as walking, hiking, and bicycling as well as completing arts/craft activities.
