Building Expressive Language Skills in the Childcare Setting
2 hour CEU Training
Approved by the NC Division Of Child Development and Early Education.
Purpose of the course: To provide an overview of expressive language development from children 18 months-5 years of age and strategies to maximize expressive language development within the childcare setting. Topics will include everyday activities utilized within the childcare setting. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, interactive engaging activities, role playing and question/answer (beginner level).
Presenter: Tracy Barnes ,MS CCC-SLP/ITFS is the owner and founder of Capitol City Speech Therapy, PLLC established in 2004. She has a passion for working with caregivers and children to build their speech and language skills through fun engaging everyday activities. Every moment in one’s life beholds a teachable moment, whether it be simply walking to the playground or washing their hands. Tracy enjoys teaching these strategies to a variety of caregivers, children and peers.
Tracy has over 28 years of experience working as a Speech Language Pathologist providing speech therapy to children in the clinic as well as their natural environments including but not limited to their homes and childcare centers. She graduated with a master’s degree from Towson State University, in Speech Language Pathology. She received her Infant Toddler and Family Specialist certification (ITFS) from the NC Infant Toddler Program in 2007.

Learning Objectives/Methods: Interactive, Videos: Following the completion of the training, the participant will be able to answer
1. When learning a new word, what are the 4 sequences each child must go through?
2. How many words should an 18-month-old be using?
3. Name 5 strategies to improve expressive vocabulary development.
4. Can you elicit a different part of speech based on the type of question you ask?
5. What types of words can you elicit during snack, bubbles, hand washing, circle time and on the playground?
